It’s been a long time since I’ve shot field tips. No, I didn’t take a 12-step program to kick the habit. I’m not prejudiced against field tips either. I just don’t have time for them.
This is great practice for my next hunting trip targeting mini critters.
I’ve been hooked on fixed-blade broadheads for years. I took a short hiatus in the late 1990s and the early part of the 21st Century when mechanical heads jumped into the archery scene. After a few years I fell off the wagon and went back to fixed-blades.
The reason I don’t have time for field points is their tendency to fly differently than broadheads, oftentimes affecting their accuracy. By shooting broadheads I skip the time it takes to re-sight in my bow and I become comfortable with the flight of the arrow equipped with a broadhead.
I’m not a 3-D shooter, but in the months leading up to the hunting season I step up my shooting and without question the broadheads are harder on targets. My Field Logic targets including the Block and the GlenDel Buck take the beating and the new Block Fusion is even better at eating broadheads from what I’ve heard. Still, the hardships are evident.
Shooting mechanical broadheads would save me some wear and tear on my targets and I’m considering using the Rage heads this fall. Will I return to field tips if I make the switch? I will if they fly the same. If they don’t; look out Mr. GlenDel.
