Late last month while the health care reform was heating up like a branding iron in the fire, a little-advertised bill in the House of Representatives easily passed through the usual political hurdles.
Mmmmm, pass the venison please!
Titled House Resolution 270, the bill recognizes the establishment of Hunters for the Hungry programs across the United States and the contributions of the program to decrease hunger and help feed the needy. Hunters for the Hungry is a Safari Club International program and is one of the most successful venues out there to get wild game meat into the kitchens of those who desperately need protein in their diet. Protein is the most expensive part of any meal and often skipped due to high cost.
Last year Hunters for the Hungry program donated 412,254 pounds of meat leading to 1,649,016 meals heaping with wild game protein. The bill was cosponsored by 43 members of congress and passed by a margin of 418 to 1.
That one dissenting vote puzzles me. Even if you’re an anti-hunter or a devout vegan, who could possibly be that coldhearted not to applaud an organization for helping fellow Americans have a warm meal and a balanced diet?
I’ve used this program extensively while hunting across the nation. In the small town of Broadus, Mont., I often donate a deer or antelope each year to the program. I leave the state feeling better about the fact I helped someone have a nourishing meal and go to bed with a full stomach. If you find yourself with more game than you can handle this fall, remember to donate.
