Everyone's On Vacation

Do you really think we need a moose in camp? Aren't the horses enough trouble?

It’s all over the news. Everyone’s on vacation. We’re right in the middle of an economic crisis and in the middle of a brouhaha over health care, and congress goes on vacation followed by the president. That’s it! I’m going on vacation!

Oops, I forgot. I have to work. Despite wanting to follow the trend of elected officials in this one arena, I have my fingers glued to the computer in an attempt to wrap up the majority of my office work before hitting the road for good this fall.

Our family did manage to take a mini vacation over the weekend. We loaded the horses and headed to the mountains to scout elk for my son’s first elk hunt. Saturday my son and I put 10 miles or more on the horses marking waypoints so we could find trails regardless if they’re under two feet of snow or not. Our rear ends reminded us of the ride Sunday, but the scouting was beneficial.

The funniest event of our mini vacation took place on Saturday evening at dusk. My wife Sharon, my daughter Katelyn and I were watering the horses in a creek below camp. Suddenly my son appeared above us on the hill and said, “Is that a moose?” I looked up and a bull moose was trotting by less than 75 yards away in the increasing darkness. Without thinking, I let go a nasally cow moose call to stop the bull. Then it dawned on me. I was holding on to my black gelding and when the bull heard the call he pivoted on a dime thinking my gelding might be his next love interest.

Needless to say Sharon wasn’t as enthusiastic as I on my moose calling success and her lecture to me stopped the bull in his tracks and quickly put him in reverse. I bet the Obamas won’t have that much fun at Martha’s Vineyards. Here’s wishing they do! I think they’re going to need it.
