I’m after Mr. Lucky…again. I’m writing this blog from Kansas and it’s hot. The rut is strarting, but the Midwest is having a slight heat wave and it’s suppressing the rutting activity. So far we’ve only one buck chasing and one buck scraping. It’s been slow.
Hey Kayser! Here I am. Oops, it's past shooting hours. Ha!
On the other hand, my good friend Greg Gilman has all the luck and he even had a close encounter with a buck I call “Mr. Lucky.” Why is he lucky? Two years ago I had a close encounter with the giant buck as a 4 1/2 year old and he escaped by the narrowest of margins. Last year the buck was only seen on trail camera, but this year he’s been posing consistently for the camera and yesterday Greg had the monster buck come chasing by his stand. When I first saw the buck two years ago I estimated him as a 160-class buck, but he’s definitely a Boone and Crockett contender today.
So how am I going to kill him if Greg doesn’t? I’m edging closer and closer to his bedding area. The heat combined with the full moon is only giving us small windows of opportunity in the morning and the evening. I’m also tryingh to set up closer to live water sources knowing that the bucks are hot since they are wearing their winter coats.
What else is up my sleeve? I’m incorporating subtle calls into every setup. Mr. Lucky is now 6 1/2 years old and definitely a rocket scienctist, but he was chasing a doe yesterday an hour after sunrise.
Here’s hoping Mr. Lucky’s luck is about to run out.
