I Know. I Know. It's Not A Whitetail.

November 17, 2009

I know I said I was going to write about whitetails for November, but this buck was just too good to resist. Could you pass a buck up like this right under your stand? Kansas was too hot so I sped back to my old stomping grounds and after watching whitetail after whitetail slip through a narrow funnel, I did a little midnight stand setting. That’s my hot tip for the week…if you can call it hot.

Could you resist a buck like this at 9 yards?

Could you resist a buck like this at 9 yards?

When the rut is in full swing like it is now, be aggressive and bold. If you see a new pattern, move a stand pronto and don’t wait another day. I saw this pattern for two days, moved a stand after dark and the next morning I arrowed this muley following a doe, at 9 yards right under me. My Mathews Reezen was silent and my Beman shaft tipped with a Rage broadhead did the job in short order. After I watched the buck stumble and fall, I looked to my left and a 150-class whitetail was watching the buck die from across the creek. Another 135-class whitetail was already moving into bow range. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I was tagged out and happier than a coyote chewing on a gut pile. I did make a coyote happy with the gutting chore for sure.

What’s next? I’m going to rifle hunt whitetails in South Dakota and it could be exciting, yet frustrating as the bucks begin to breed and squirrel themselves away with their lovers in the oddest of hideouts. Look everywhere for a big buck and expect them to be anywhere.

Good luck and hunt aggressively the next couple of weeks.
