I love to call deer and I have called in a pile already this fall including the big buck in the previous blog, but you need to tone down your calls when bucks are in close. The problem most of us have, me included, is that calling is so much fun, but when a buck gets close, he can pinpoint the sound and if comes from above, he might be able to find you in the tree.
Here’s my rule. When grunting, cease most calling when a buck gets inside of 60 yards and if you do need to get him going your direction, only do it when he is moving so his footsteps create additional noise he has to sort through when he’s looking for the culprit.
As for rattling, never rattle when a buck is closer than 100 yards. He’s expecting to see deer and if he doesn’t, he might spook.
Sending out the sound of buck love.
Have fun with the calls, but use them to get a buck moving in your direction. Don’t use them for entertainment because the results could be disheartening.
Good Hunting!
