We wrapped the latest edition of “You Call The Shots” in record time. It went more smoothly than creamy-style peanut butter thanks to the great production crew at North American Hunter. I actually had a bad feeling when my trip kicked off with a series of unlucky omens. For starters, the flight crew failed to show up the evening of my trip and I had to spend an unexpected overnight in Denver. After more than an hour on the phone I finally secured connections to still make it to the set the next day, but the airlines had something to say about that the following morning.
United booked me on a Frontier flight, but failed to release my ticket. At 5 a.m. I was running back and forth between the United and Frontier ticket counters pleading for someone to punch the correct codes into the computers.
I was one sweaty cowboy and that wasn’t good since my deodorant was stowed in my luggage that didn’t find its way to me. Speaking of luggage, when I finally landed in Minneapolis, yes, you guessed it: no luggage.
I finally said to heck with it and headed to the set. Luckily the crew had extra shirts to get me by, but I did hint they might want to keep their distance due to the lack of deodorant. Once we started jabbering about the shooting scenarios the lack of deodorant (and clean undergarments) seemed to be a thing of the past. It was great fun and the next two days flew by like Christmas morning as a kid. As for my luggage, it finally caught up with me that first evening by 8 p.m.
This morning I bid farewell to my good friend Larry Weishuhn as we separated at the Denver airport. Larry’s cordial company is always appreciated and I always regret not getting to spend more time with this super knowledgeable hunter. Visiting with Larry is like visiting with a hunting professor. We had an hour to kill while waiting for our flight and he easily filled that time with hunting tales, biologist stories and a series of adventures relating his 13 helicopter crashes. Yes, he’s lucky to be alive and 13 seems to be his lucky number.
It’s back home for me for the weekend and although I’m always happy to land at base camp, “You Call The Shots” was a great working vacation.
